Whether you’re looking to add a pop of color or something fun and whimsical to your farmhouse holiday decor, gnomes are the perfect addition to any Christmas tree. They’re super easy to make and come in all different shapes and sizes. Plus, they’re super affordable so you can make a whole gnome family to display on your tree.
Gnomes are a huge part of Scandinavian culture and they are often associated with Christmas. They’re similar to elves in that they help Santa deliver presents but they have a more mischievous side. Gnomes are also seen as nature spirits that interact with humans in helpful or mischievous ways.
They’re also thought to be the guardians of forests, fields, and other natural areas. Depending on the culture, gnomes are either friendly or evil and they can often be found in the homes of children as their protectors. During the holidays, children will leave a bowl of porridge out for them and they will return to hand-deliver gifts on Christmas Eve.
With so many different ways to incorporate gnomes into your home, it’s no wonder they’re such a popular holiday trend. And, the best thing about gnomes is that they can be used in both traditional and modern holiday decor. So, if you’re ready to try this new festive design trend and add some gnome magic to your holiday style, read on for all the tips and tricks you need!
The first step is to set aside a piece of white cardstock and a pencil. Have the kids lay their hand flat on the paper and trace around it. Then, flip the paper over and use any object (like a eraser) to go over the tracing. This will remove the chalk and leave a pattern behind. Now, take a piece of green felt and cut out the mitten shape along the outline you made on the paper. The hat will be a little bigger and you can adjust that later.
Next, grab the ping pong balls and glue them to the underside of the hat brim for the gnome’s nose. Alternatively, you could also use a black marker to draw the face on your gnome. Once the hat is finished, put it on top of your gnome.
To finish off the gnome, you’ll need to hot glue a red hat onto the hat. You can also use a green pipe cleaner for the beard if you’d prefer.
